Food and Service: While walking down Las Olas Blvd in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida recently, looking for a place to eat, we decided on Luigi’s Tuscan Grill for dinner. Situated on a small canal with a beautiful outdoor seating area, we were brought to the patio table of our choice to dine al fresco. General Manager Gabriel was table side immediately, introducing himself and our server Giuliano. They moved away briskly and talking animatedly in Italian!  Employees speaking Italian in an Italian restaurant? Love it!

Chef Luigi Dimeo is Creating Authentic, Delicious Italian Food! Prego!

Restaurant owner, Bob Woltin also owned the very successful Johnny V’s and Louie Louie Italian Bistro, both onLas Olas, explains that in January, Luigi’s Tuscan Grill underwent a $500,000+ renovation with an all-new kitchen, new ceiling and floors, updated patio with new landscaping and lighting and more. Chef Luigi and Mr. Woltin also revamped the menu, lowering the prices on such favorites as the short ribs and veal dishes and added new dishes, including five mouthwatering panini’s, salads, appetizers, pastas and more. An incredible wine list awaits the oenephile or novice wine lover, and the servers and management can effortlessly guide you to the best choices and pairings for your dinner.

That's a Meatball from Chef Dimeo

Soon we were sipping on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, enjoying thick, round meatballs with marinara sauce and a generous house salad. The meatballs were awesome! The house salad was loaded with diced tomatoes, red onion, pepperoncini peppers, Kalamata olives, hard-boiled egg, cucumbers and balsamic vinaigrette.  You can add chicken and gorgonzola cheese if you like. It reminded me or my Italian Granny Francesca’s salad…and hers was excellent. The loaf of “crispy on the outside and soft on the inside” garlic bread is so good; it was tempting us to eat it all!

The breeze was gently cooling the patio and the vibe was festive, as each table filled up around us.

We decided to try multiple pastas, starting with Pappardelle with sausage ragu, porcini mushrooms and a touch of cream. This turned out to be my favorite dish of the night, with lots of crumbled sausage, tomato and the mushrooms, tossed with toothsome homemade noodles, cooked to perfection. I even packaged what was left in my bowl for later! We loved the Linguini Con Gamberoni, shrimp served in Fra Diavolo (or scampi if you prefer) sauce, with jumbo shrimp perched on top. Fresh pepper and chili flakes were brought tableside too… and we enjoyed. Chef Luigi makes amazing pasta dishes!

Gabriel is the type of manager with a natural ability to make each and every customer feel so very welcome.  This is a skill, yes…but also must come from the heart. There are still people like Gabe in the restaurant business that have a passion for hospitality, but they are getting harder to find. It is refreshing to watch Gabe “work the room”, gracefully delegating to the servers and front door hostesses, while still having time for each guest as he opens wine and converses with the guests. His table side manner is top-notch.

We saw many other fantastic dishes from talented Chef Luigi Dimeo coming out of the sunken kitchen, such as Meat Lasagna, Veal Chop Parmigiana, Chicken Milanese, Beef Carpaccio, Calamari Fritti, Clams Casino and Filet Mignon to name a few. The Luigi’s Tuscan Grill features signature cocktails and is the recipient of a Wine Spectator Magazine’s Award of Excellence.

The daily Happy Hour at the bar features a wide selection of drink specials and specially-priced bar bites including Margherita Pizza, Meatball Sliders, Baked Shrimp, Bruschetta Mista and more. Ask for Verona at the door… she will take you to the best seat available for dinner, happy hour and patio dining!

The three Italian classic desserts we recommend are made daily at the restaurant are Tiramisu, Fresh Ricotta Cheesecake and NY Style Fried Cheesecake. For a taste of Italy without going far from home, visit Luigi’s Tuscan Grill and tell them Tom House from© sent you!
